Tile batches in the atelier prepared for project finishing.

Architects & Designers

Project support for specified surfaces.

A concise working route for samples, finish direction, lead times, installation notes, and care.

Vlaamse Tegelmeesters works best when material choices are discussed early: surface, setting, quantity, edge character, glaze direction, and the required rhythm of the project.

The work is handmade and small-batch. The trade process is designed to make that variation clear before specification, ordering, or installation.

Samples

Available for active projects once surface direction is clear.

Lead Times

Discuss 8+ weeks ahead for larger commissions and custom directions.

Annual Output

Approximately 600 m² produced each year.

Drying / Firing

Dried between pieces of wood before 1080°C bisque and 1180°C glaze firing.

Finish

Flat, glazed, relief, and selected custom glaze directions.

Use

Interior wall surfaces, wet areas by project review, exterior by inquiry.

Working Protocol

A slower material needs clearer decisions.

The aim is not to force a catalogue choice. The aim is to reduce uncertainty before the surface reaches site.

01

Brief and setting

Share intended room, surface area, wet/dry context, visual direction, timing, and whether the surface must relate to stone, timber, plaster, or metal finishes.

02

Sample selection

Samples are treated as project tools, not generic swatches. They indicate glaze family, tone, relief, and movement; final production will still carry batch variation.

03

Batch confirmation

Quantity, finish direction, approximate lead time, delivery route, and any reservation deposit are confirmed before work is held or produced for the project.

04

Site coordination

Installation remains the responsibility of the appointed installer. Substrate, waterproofing, adhesives, grout, movement joints, and final site suitability must be confirmed locally.

Specification Notes

What should be decided before order.

Sample policy

Samples may be supplied for active projects after the intended surface family is identified. Samples are representative, not a guarantee of identical tone or glaze movement.

Lead times

Prepared bisque stock can reduce timing when available. Larger, relief, or custom glaze directions should be discussed at least 8 weeks ahead; complex commissions may require longer.

Annual production

Annual production is approximately 600 m², keeping the work intentionally limited and tied to atelier rhythm rather than industrial availability.

Drying and firing profile

Tiles are dried between pieces of wood, bisque fired at 1080°C, and glaze fired at 1180°C. Batch timing follows drying, firing, and glaze planning.

Finish options

Flat glazed surfaces, selected relief surfaces, glaze-family selection, and restrained custom directions are available by discussion. Strict factory repetition is not the character of the work.

Install notes

Blend tiles across the batch before installation. Confirm substrate, waterproofing, adhesive, grout, movement joints, and cleaning method with the appointed installer.

Care notes

Use mild non-abrasive cleaning. Avoid harsh acids, strong alkalis, abrasive pads, and snagging cloths on relief surfaces. Relief may require a soft-bristle brush.

Exterior and wet areas

Interior wet areas and exterior projects are considered individually. Final suitability depends on installation, setting, climate, and maintenance conditions.

Spec Sheet

A one-page reference for project files.

The sheet gives architects and designers a quick reference for material character, samples, lead times, installation cautions, and care.

Project Conversation

Bring the material in before the specification hardens.

For architects and designers, the best moment to inquire is before quantities, grout lines, and final finishes are locked.

Early discussion allows samples, batch planning, and finish direction to support the architecture rather than react to it late.
